Kick-off to the Fall Semester

We are in the throes of the Fall Semester and cannot believe it!  The summer ended well with Jason getting to a good place with the book he’s co-authoring (he’s still writing the last few chapters and then they’ll begin the editing process when they find a publisher) and the Lord provided most of what we needed to raise in support for our year of ministry in Australia!

Last weekend we had a mini retreat for returning students who have been involved with Cru.  We prayed together and shared some vision for what we’re trusting the Lord for this semester.  After the meeting, about 10 of us handed out flyers and Cru cards (cards with discounts to local businesses & our pghcru.com website & meeting info) for about an hour.  In just a few days we’ve handed out over 5,000!  It’s so exciting to think that students are receiving this little gift and with it are checking out websites where they can explore who Jesus is and how they can have a relationship with Him!

One of our other kick-off strategies this semester is a survey we’re doing to raffle off an iPad or $500 in books.  We’re asking students to go to the pghcru.com website and answer a few easy questions:  when faced with big decisions, where do you turn for guidance and advice?  What do you live for?  what do you believe happens when you die?  if you could ask God one question what would it be?  if it were possible to have a relationship with God, would you be interested? do you believe Jesus Christ is relevant to the answers to these questions?  Who is Jesus Christ according to your understanding?

We’re excited to report that about 180 surveys have been filled out by students so far, and we’re in the process of trying to follow-up with these students to share with them the exciting news about having a relationship with God through Jesus Christ!!  We’ll definitely share what happens soon!

This is what our ministry is all about – helping students learn, understand and grow in a relationship with Jesus so they can help other students do the same, and to help them have the tools to walk with Jesus for a lifetime.  We’re honored to have another semester in Pittsburgh to do what we believe the Lord has led us to with Cru, and we’re so thankful to partner with YOU in this!  We hope you’re encouraged to hear how the Lord works this year in our lives and ministry!

Prayer Requests

  • pray for us to find balance in our schedules and time for ministry & family & rest
  • pray for us as we are juggling multiple responsibilities in ministry here in Pittsburgh as well as trying to prepare to go to Australia (we leave Christmas day!)
  • IMPORTANT: in getting ready for Australia, we’re trying to make sure YOUR contact info is updated.  if you’d be willing to receive our prayer letters via email (if you don’t already), please email us with your email address by 12/1/10.  Ta!  (Thanks in Aussie lingo)

We had our first Pittsburgh Metro Cru meeting last night and about 95 students showed up!  Many were new students and there were 5 campuses represented!  Win!

It’s been a great week of engaging with the campus community.  Our students leaders at Pitt are really stepping up and sacrificing time they might be sleeping or lounging to help pass out Cru cards (discount cards to 6 local businesses w/our website and info on it) and info on a survey we’re doing, where a student answers a few questions and is entered to win an iPad or $500 for books.  This survey, known as the “O-week survey”, engages students about where they go to for guidance and advice, what they think happens after death, if they think Jesus is relevant to these things and if they’d like to know more about having a relationship with Jesus.  We offer to grab coffee with them and build a relationship with them as we also share the good news with them.

Jason and I have both had opportunities to go on campus and engage with random students about their opinions about spiritual things.  It’s really interesting that most of the 10 people I (Maria) talked with earlier this week are exploring faith, especially as they’re trying to formulate their own faith and not just believe because they grew up in a believing family.  Many of the students I chatted with come from some kind of church background, but about half have had experiences with their church that have turned them away from continuing seeking out a community of believers in Jesus.  I’m hoping to be able to see these students again and continue interacting with them!

We have really enjoyed this last bit of summer!  (Although we are looking forward to a bit of endless summer, since we’ll arrive in Melbourne in the heat again!)  Classes are about to begin in Pittsburgh and we had our first few meetings with returning students to rally towards getting the gospel to the campus. We are rounding out our almost-month-long traveling spurt with a quick trip to central PA for Jason’s brother’s wedding reception!  We had a blast at Large-a-palooza with our friends from PSU and an awesome time worshipping our sovereign Lord of all at our STINT briefing.  We had a great time with our team there, getting [...]
